Nordic Windpower is a privately owned manufacturer of wind turbines that was founded as a government run business in Sweden and is now based in Kansas City, Missouri in the United States.
The company started in 1975 as a government research and development program to build turbines called the N1000 for Maglarp in Skåne and Näsudden in Gotland.[1] The blades are unique in that they have two blades rather than the conventional three.
In 1999 the company became privately owned Nordic Windpower AB. After selling only 5 turbines it became a United States entity in 2005 and promptly sold 19 turbines.[2][3] It received a $16 million loan guarantee from the United States Department of Energy.[4]
Its private owners are Khosla Ventures, New Enterprise Associates and Novus Energy Partners, Goldman Sachs, Impax Asset Management, I2BF Venture Capital, Pulsar Energy Capital and other investors.[5]
In the United States it has its headquarters in Berkley, California with a production facility in Pocatello, Idaho and research center in the Bristol, United Kingdom. [6]
In December 2010 it announced it plans to move to Missouri to be closer to its market and after receiving $5.6 million in incentive packages to relocate to the Kansas City International Airport.[7] It will invest $16 million.[8] It will occupy 50,000 square feet (4,600 m2) of the 1,700,000-square-foot (160,000 m2) former American Airlines Overhaul facility at the airport which the airline has abandoned. It was also be the first tenant at the KCI Intermodal BusinessCentre being developed by Trammell Crow Company at the airport.[9]
